A new study shows that Infinitum's recycling system is better for the climate and environment than comparable reuse systems.
A recent life cycle analysis shows that Infinitum's recycling system is more climate- and environmentally friendly than the equivalent reuse system would be.

less CO2 emissions than new production
Over 90% of all bottles and cans in Norway are deposited, giving them a new life instead of becoming waste. That is why the deposit scheme is one of the world's greatest environmental successes. And best of all: the industry bears both the cost and the responsibility itself.
Infinitum documents all costs, resource use, and how energy-efficient the deposit system is. We do this to be transparent – and to continuously improve!
For you as a consumer, it costs an average of one øre per unit, precisely because the system is so simple and well-designed. You bring bottles and cans to the store when you are already going there. At the store, they are compressed and then sent on with the same lorries that have delivered goods to the store.
This makes the Norwegian deposit system one of the world's most efficient systems!
New and recycled plastic behave a little differently. If only recycled plastic is used, the bottles can turn grey. We want to recycle as much as possible, but need a little new plastic each round to get good results over multiple cycles. We have found that a good mix is around 80% recycled and 20% new plastic. With a little new each time, the plastic can be used for new bottles approximately seven times in our system.
We reduce the emissions from the deposit scheme.
We make the recycling of bottles and cans even more efficient.
We are developing a more circular system for packaging
Our system is built on a circular economy, where materials are reused instead of discarded. This results in less waste and lower CO₂ emissions
Plastic bottles are sorted and recycled at our facilities. There they are cleaned, compressed, and converted into new plastic.
Aluminium cans go through the same system. They are sorted, cleaned and compressed before becoming new aluminium.
Together we take care of the environment for future generations
In collaboration with Østfoldforskning, we have developed life cycle analyses (LCA) that provide a comprehensive picture of the environmental impact of cans and bottles – from raw material extraction and production to use, deposit, and recycling. The analyses also include transport and energy use at every stage.

An empty bottle is full of energy, and many are surprised by how much the environment saves from depositing. See how much energy you save by depositing your half-litre bottles.
